Puppy Kindergarten:
Do you have a puppy between the ages of 9 to 16 weeks of age? Socialization of your new puppy is extremely important in terms of a happy, well-adjusted, four-legged family member. Your puppy's future with your family depends upon how well you bond with each other. Puppy kindergarten classes are designed to help you learn how to "read" your puppy, how to establish its proper position in the family, and how to start training your puppy so he or she know what to expect, and you're happy with the response you receive.
In a Puppy Kindergarten class you will learn important skills while you and your puppy are having fun. Your pup will socialize on and off lead with other puppies in the class. You'll learn the Gentling Exercise, and play games such as Pass the Puppy, all of which is designed to acclimate your pup to different people and situations. You'll end up with a better adjusted family member.
Next session: Not scheduled at this time
Sign up form. Call for more information about a scheduled class. Class size is limited.
You must have Acrobat Reader installed to view and type in the form. If you don't already have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download it now.
Pet Partners (Pet-Assisted Therapy) Evaluations
One of the greatest gifts we can give to people in hospitals and care facilities is a visit from a caring person and a pet. Pets brighten up people's lives immensely. It makes the quiet and sad more animated, and it allows the sick to feel a little better, if only for just a moment. It has been proven that the presence of loving pets increases the quality of life and even extends the length of life.
To participate in pet-assisted therapy , your pet would need to pass an evaluation to be sure he or she has the right temperament and behavior for this type of activity, and to evaluate how your pet and you work as a team.
While Harmony is no longer actively involved in the organization of this program, we still feel it is a wonderful opportunity for special people and pets to do something meaningful in the community. For information and to sign up, you can contact either of the evaluators:
Call Maureen at 561-745-8935 or email
or call Karen at 561-287-7711 or email for more information.
To purchase the Pet Partners workbook and video, go to the Delta Society online store, or call 1-425-687-2346. Online, select Online
Store, then Animal Assisted Therapy (AAA/T). Go about 3/4 down the page and select "Pets Helping People Manual (Home Study).
The evaluation consists of the Pet Partners Skills Test and the Pet Partners Aptitude Test. To get an idea of what skills are expected of you and your dog during the evaluation, please read all of the information on the Delta site by clicking those links.
You are encouraged to go to the Delta Society website for more information on the Pet Partners program.
The evaluation is based on the AKC's Canine Good Citizen Test, but adapted to simulate situations that one would encounter while visiting. If your dog can pass the AKC test, loves to be hugged and petted by strangers, stays calm in novel situations, and looks to you for guidance and instruction, then you may be a winning team! Other pets besides dogs are acceptable and are evaluated differently. Even if you're not interested in becoming certified with your pet, we believe that every dog should be a "good citizen"!
Obedience Classes
Classes are held here on a regular basis. A class will help you train your dog to respond to you and do that in a situation full of distractions. A responsive pet is much more enjoyable to have around and increases the satisfaction level of the relationship. Start puppies in a formal class at about 6 months of age (fun, repetitive, informal training should begin at home almost immediately). To find out about the next class, contact the trainer, Debbie Nagler at 561-683-9700.
You may be interested in going to Debbie's column on Training Tips.
You may also want to check out the Dog Obedience Club of Palm Beach County. These classes, from puppy to utility in obedience, to tracking and agility, are taught by people who are putting titles on their dogs in the show ring. Whether you want a better behaved and socialized pet, or you are serious about showing, there's lots of information at their website.
